Snow is in the Forecast. Is Your Body Ready?

Asking yourself if your body is ready is key to staying safe. I see too many people with preventable injuries this time of the year.

Here are my top 10 tips for staying safe. Trust me your body will thank you.

  1. Tell a family member you are going to shovel. Especially if you live alone. Safety first.
  2. Put on sunscreen. Yes, you can get sunburned in the winter.
  3. Dress appropriately. It should go without saying dress for the weather. We all remember that using Hats, gloves, and jackets is important. More importantly, wear appropriate footwear with slip-resistant soles and keep an eye on the ground to watch for icy spots.
  4. Warm up your muscles. Warming up increases your circulation and makes you ready for moving. It also helps to prevent injury. Opt for dynamic movements that move your body in the same ways you would when you are shoveling.
  5. Take BREAKS if you have a lot of property. Even if you take a few minutes to rest. Most people are better off shoveling more often than waiting until it is deep.
  6. Drink water before, during, and after even if you are not thirsty. According to consumer reports “You might feel less thirsty in cold weather than hot, but it’s still easy to become dehydrated, which can impair your body’s ability to regulate heat.”
  7. Choose the right equipment. Use a snow thrower, a snow blower for the big stuff, and only a shovel with a D handle when necessary. The D handle gives you much more control.
  8. Proper technique. Most people know to lift with your big muscles in your legs, not your back. It is important to also avoid twisting and step forward in the direction you are throwing instead. Keep the load that you are lifting light.
  9. Shovel early and often. Less is best when shoveling. I am sure you would rather do it when the snow stops but it is much faster overall and a lot better for your body if you do it in smaller bites. It is like eating, slow and steady, more effective in the long run.
  10. STRETCH at the end as soon as you come inside. Especially paying attention to the big muscles in your legs, booty, and back. Even if it is 5 minutes you are much less likely to be in pain the next day if you take the time right after you come inside.
