A wellness week is a fun way to get a bunch of wellness-related events jammed into one week. They are a great way to build camaraderie and begin to build a better culture among employees. Often the week includes fitness, nutrition, mental health, financial well-being, and other fun team-building activities. These weeks jump-start the process of learning why health is important with effective tools to get it done. They also help improve employee happiness, and retention, promote a healthy culture and the bottom line.

How to create a great wellness week?

A great wellness program begins with asking the question. Why? And to be more specific. Why are we doing a wellness week? So many business owners, CEOs, and human resource directors ask me about the what and the how, and I always ask why? Why are we doing this? Why are we doing this now?

I ask these simple questions however many managers often don’t really know an answer let alone a really great answer. Here is the reason why. Every great program should start with the end in mind. Nearly every successful business, exercise plan, professional athlete, and screenplay writer begins with the end in mind. As Stephen Covey states in his book 7 Habits of Successful People, “Begin With the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.”

Getting to the why will help to drive a successful program. I suggest to my clients to ask their team of employees for input. As them a series of questions.

Here are a few of my favorites.

  • Why is corporate wellness important to you?
  • What corporate wellness programs are you most interested in?
  • What type of programs would you like to see?
  • What corporate wellness programs are you not interested in?
  • When is the best time for you to participate in a program?
  • What incentive would entice you to participate in a corporate wellness program

Once you have answers to these questions planning a program that is specifically customized to your employees will be much easier, more effective, and ultimately more fun.
